More Than Metal: Two Different Jobs, Not One

Shot peening and coatings address two separate failure modes. Shot peening extends a spring’s fatigue life, which is its ability to withstand repeated cycles of compression, extension, or torsion without cracking. Coatings protect the spring’s surface from the environment it operates in, including moisture, chemicals, and UV exposure. Here’s how each one works, and why neither one substitutes for the other.

Shot peening works by propelling steel shot media at a spring’s surface at high velocity. The impact doesn’t just affect the surface; it drives a layer of compressive residual stress deep into the wire itself, strengthening the spring at the structural level where failure actually begins.


That matters because springs don’t fail from the outside in. They fail when small surface cracks form under repeated load cycles and grow until the spring breaks. The compressive stress shot peening creates resistance to crack formation, which means fewer failures, longer service life, and springs that hold up under the continuous cyclical loads that garage door and mechanical spring applications demand.


Shot peening is performed in-house at Iowa Spring rather than outsourced, and we can validate the results through our own fatigue testing process — so the performance gains aren’t assumed, they’re confirmed.

Where shot peening protects against fatigue, coatings protect against corrosion and environmental wear. Iowa Spring offers epoxy and acrylic e-coat finishes, along with zinc plate options in clear, yellow, and black finishes. Powder coating, performed in-house to Iowa Spring’s standards, is also available in custom colors to match your application or branding requirements.

The right combination of shot peening and coating depends heavily on where the spring operates. Coastal installations and marine-adjacent equipment face constant moisture and salt exposure. Chemical processing facilities introduce corrosive vapors and spills. 

Agricultural equipment, rail equipment, snow removal equipment, and power-sports applications all combine heavy cyclical loading with harsh outdoor conditions. Any equipment exposed to ocean transit faces similar combined demands.
